Capua is an ancient port town on a river that grew from the ruins of Casilinum when the survivors of the original Capua – now Santa Maria Capua Vetere – fled their city after it was sacked and burned by Saracens in the year 841. The Campania Amphitheatre is the most important example of these remains. In the entire Roman Empire, only the Colosseum was bigger. In its heyday, between the end 1st century and the beginning of the 2nd century, it was four storey high. The Mithraeum, discovered in 1922, dates back to the 2nd or 3rd century AD, and represents one of the most complete monuments dedicated to the cult of the Persian God Mithras.
The Royal Palace of Caserta is one of the largest and most majestic buildings in Italy, it is also one of the most visited places by tourists. It took 22 years to build, from 1752 to 1774. The plans of the Royal Palace of Caserta and the park were designed by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli who followed part of the works, which were completed by his son Charles. Built on a rectangular plan with four large internal courtyards, the Palace, which extends over a surface area of a little over than 45,000 square metres, is 36 metres high, with five floors, 1,200 rooms, 34 staircases and 1,742 windows.
