Mt. Vesuvius is the only active Volcano in continental Europe. Situated in Campania, it has a hight of 1,281 meters and it is located in a 4 km wide caldera.

In a painting from the I century found in the House of the Centenario in Pompeii (now at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples), we can see Dioniso covered by grapes, near Mt. Vesuvius, and a snake in the foreground as a symbol of fertility. In this painting the mountain has only one peak and it is covered in vegetation and vineyards. Its fertile soil rich in minerals and organic elements favored the settlements of Oscans and Samnites and led to the founding of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

In 79 A.D., the inhabitants of the area did not know about the danger of the Volcano that had last erupted many centuries before. Strabone, a traveller and geographer, could only make assumptions about the fact that the mountain was once a Volcano: “It is a mountain surrounded by fertile grounds excepted for the peak that is completely sterile, covered in ashes, with caves and burned stones, therefore it is possible to conclude that they were once part of burning craters...”

The great eruption of 79 A.D. modified the shape of the Volcano, with the collapsing of the South East side, where the new crater was formed. The last eruption was on 18th March 1944. It was a powerful eruption, which in part destroyed small villages with some victims. This eruption coincided with the arrival of the Anglo-American troops in Campania, aggravating the living conditions of the population, already suffering from the war. Since 1944, there have been no eruptions, but Mt. Vesuvius is still active and is considered one of the most dangerous Volcanoes in the world as 700,000 people live in the surrounding area.
