Ravello is a town situated 350 m above the Amalfi Coast, famous for its beautiful and peaceful atmosphere. Founded during the Gothic War in the VI century, became part of the duchy of Naples. Later, around the IX century it was incorporated into the Duchy of Amalfi and became a diocese. In the XIII century was a period of prosperity during which the rich merchant families who stayed there, built several palaces and commercial activities in Arab-Sicilian style due the frequent trade with Sicily, North Africa and Spain. Among the architectural gems is the cathedral dedicated to St. Pantaleone and located in the square of the Bishopric with an open view of the Valley of the Dragon.

The Cathedral was founded by the first bishop of Ravello, Orso Papirius, in 1086 and renovated in 1786. The simple facade presents a precious bronze door adorned with 54 panels, the interior, three naves divided by antique columns, is richly decorated with mosaics with tiles imported from Syria, as those of the elegant pulpit dating back the 1272. In the crypt of the Cathedral is the Museum that houses Roman sarcophagi, tombstones, sculptures and valuable jewelry.

How to arrive

By car:

Highway Napoli-Pompei-Salerno Exit Angri Follow the signs "Valico di Chiunzi" and "Amalfi Coast",

Ravello reaching through the pass.

At Caserta Sud, take the A30 towards Salerno and continue until exit "Vietri sul mare".

Follow the signs "Amalfi Coast" and "Ravello", passing Cetara, Maiori and Minori.

This road is very scenic, but more busy, especially on weekends and holidays.

From the Piazza of the Bishopric, made a walk through the alleys and stairs you get to Villa Cimbrone, a former rustic fund, purchased in 1904 by Ernest William Beckett who transformed it into the wonderful place that it is today. A huge garden, adorned with roses, camellias, exotic plants, and marble statues, leads through an avenue, to the viewpoint said “of the infinite”, a terrace with breathtaking views situated on the highest pitched of the coast.

Many famous people have spent their holidays in Ravello: the musician Wagner found inspiration in the garden of Villa Rufolo for the garden of Klingsor of his opera “Parsifal”; the painter Turner repeatedly in his paintings the views of the coast, now on display at the Tate Gallery; the writer David Herbert Lawrence wrote in Ravello several chapters of his novel "Lady Chatterley's Lover"; Virginia Woolf, Paul Valery, John Ruskin, Gore Vidal and many others stayed several times in these places.

On the right of the Cathedral a square tower marks the entrance of Villa Rufolo, a complex of buildings dating back the XIII and XIV centuries, with a large park having Mediterranean and exotic vegetation with pines and cypresses turning this place in one of the most beautiful in Campania. The villa in the 1974 was acquired by the Provincial Tourism of Salerno. Every year in summer in the garden of the Villa are held the important concerts of the “Ravello Festival”.
